Battery Installation
To power the systems on the Coupe, Mark elected to use a high power, sealed, deep cycle battery from OPTIMA BATTERIES® . These batteries can be mounted in any orientation to suit your needs. OPTIMAS battery technologies offer many advantages over a traditional battery.

Some 18 guage sheet metal was formed to create a tray and clamp for the battery. A circular notch was cut in the sheet metal clamp and then positioned and clamped with the OPTIMA battery in place. With the battery removed the clamp was then plug welded to the tray.
After deciding where the interior would stop and the trunk would begin a location for the battery and tray was chosen. The flange on one corner of the tray was notched to conform to the floor and holes were drilled in the flanges for plug welding to the floor. Two holes were also drilled on the topside for two 10-32 nutserts.

The tray was then welded to the cars floor and painted. Mark machined a simple aluminum hold down clamp to complete the installation. Having the OPTIMA battery spaced off the floor, insulation can be installed under it. Using this type of tray design eliminates having to access difficult to reach bolts.

Battery Installation
To get the power from the battery forward to the engine, a battery cable kit from Taylor Cable Products was chosen along with 2 of their bulkhead connectors.

After cutting 2 holes thru the trunk floor and installing the connectors, the cables were cut to length and terminals crimped on. Mark added boots to the connections for protection. The underneath side was handled in the same fashion.

Mark wanted to route the cables inside the frame rails. To handle this, 2 feedthrus were fabbed from some rectangle tubing and 1/8" plate. Grommets protect the cables from abrasion and keep water out. After determining their position, tack welds keep them in place until final welding is done with the body off.
