Air Conditioning/Heat Lines

To plumb the compressor and Evaporator unit, Mark started with Vintage Air's space saver fittings attached to the rear of the compressor. They provide the transition from the #12 size on the compressor to the necessary #8 and #10 for the hoses. Service ports are also incorporated into the fittings. In Marks case, with the compressor mounted tight to the block the low pressure service port would not be very accessible, to remedy this another service port on the hose fitting was planned.

To attach to the condenser, stainless tubing and end fittings from Vintage Air were utilized. After Mark formed them with a tubing bender, the o-ring ends were Tig-welded on, (silver soldering will work also).

To complete the plumbing Mark chose Aeroquip Performance Products stainless braided hose and nickel-plated reusable fittings. This included their new line of air conditioning hoses and o-ring fittings that you can assemble yourself.

After cutting the hose to the required lengths, fittings were assembled to each end. Under the category "Why haven’t I used these before" Mark mentioned that purchasing a set or Aeroquip’s magnetic aluminum vise jaws made the assembly job much easier. They grip the fittings very firmly without the worry of damage. Aeroquip’s new reusable fittings are fully field-serviceable and available in different bend angles and w/wo refrigerant charge ports.

Picture are the assembled #10 heater water lines, #6 AC line, #8 AC line and #10 AC line w/ service port.

Installation on the car was pretty straightforward. Plan your routing and fittings to minimize any bends. The AC hoses require generous bend radii. Mark chose to route the two lines to the condenser between the rack and the cross member.

The completed installation is durable and looks great.
