Power door locks and alarm

In keeping with a vintage theme, Mark wanted to retain door handles. Wanting a more convenient way to lock and unlock the car, Mark decided to adapt a remote power door-lock system with optional alarm from SPAL Technologies. There are many levels of kits and options, including a shaved door handle kit available from SPAL.

The first modification was to the stock latch and lock. The latch pictured on the left reflects the changes. A trip to a local hobby shop for some R/C parts provided the linkage. Part of the stock slide lock arm was cut off and a hole was drilled and tapped to attach the bell crank. Another hole was drilled and countersunk on the far side to attach the mini ball end to the slide arm. The original key lock on the passenger side latch was also cut off. Pictured on the right is a stock latch with the 2 new holes drilled.

To mount the actuators to the doors, Mark plug welded some sheet metal brackets to the doors. After checking the travel limits Mark trimmed and threaded the ends of the SPAL supplied rods to complete the linkage. Check everything for smooth operation and adjust if needed so the linkage cannot travel over center and possibly bind.

Pictured is a modified latch with actuator and linkage.

To mount the controller, Mark welded a sheet metal bracket inside the driver side door jam.

The bottom of the package shelf was chosen to mount the remote receiver and alarm siren. Mark used a piece of bent aluminum screwed to the interior support to mount the alarm shock sensor, doubled sided tape secures the sensor to the bracket. The sensor needs to be mounted level, horizontal and accessible so it’s sensitivity can be adjusted. Wiring will be completed at final assembly, but plan ahead where you want to run harnesses.
