Trick Details (those finishing touches)

Mark wanted to thoroughly upgrade the headlights and turn signals while retaining a stock flavor. He based the design on some 7” halogen headlights and round LED arrays. The headlight plastic housing location tabs were modified with a dremel and file to register in the original headlight mount rings. The original spring retainers were removed and replaced with a shorter version. They were made from stainless sheet stock by bending in a vise and then re-riveted to the frames. This allowed the stock adjusters to be retained. A pair of swap meet headlight rings with the tabs removed completes the package.

The turn signals were designed around some aftermarket ABS fillers and some black ABS rod stock. The round sections were turned to fit the machined aluminum bezels then glued into the filler pieces. After molding and smoothing they were painted and cleared.

For the turn signal lenses, Mark contacted Gary at GEM Custom Laser . He cut the acrylic to size and laser engraved the V-8 emblems also. This is one of those sublte details that you will have to look really close for.

While working with Gary and thinking about neat applications to utilize laser engraving, Mark decided to use it on his interior knobs. Here you can see Mark’s knob design after machining and polishing. The last step was to have GEM Custom Laser engrave the chosen symbols on the faces of the knobs. The materials, effects and applications are left to your imagination.
